In Malaysia, long, long ago, little boys dreamed of when they would become big, powerful warriors. Protecting their family and village. The belief was that as powerful warriors, they would gain favor with the gods. Any failed missions, they believed, would bring disfavor and the wrath of their holy deities. So, unsurprisingly, with nothing to lose, the missions of these warriors, called the Amucos were frenzied and maniacal. Chaotic and explosive. From these warriors, who would commit suicide if a warring nation bested them in war, the word Amok derived, being used centuries later to explain the Malaysian phenomenon where males, particularly in the southeast asian countries, would seemingly kirk out in an unprovoked manner. Psychologists explained this behavior, this running amok, as a sudden explosion of internal tension created by a hierarchal society. Here in the states, bizarre behavior such as this is often called going postal. What’s ironic is that this concept is rarely connected to the female experience. While male emasculation lies emblazoned at the root of running amok, there is no explanation, no psychological diagnosis of what happens when a woman is suddenly teetering on the edge. Maybe, our instance of running amok is called motherhood.
